Coinage in Seborga

Euro

The Principality of Sebourg supports, like all other small states on European territory, the use of the currency of a neighbouring state, and in our specific case that is the Euro. Therefore, our monetary policy does not currently provide for the issuance of a currency linked to the Principality of Sebourg.

Luigini of the ancient principality

The Luigino minted in Seborga between 1666 and 1671 was the only coin issued in the history of the Principality of Sabourg. It should be remembered that the issue had been authorised by Louis XIV (hence the name Petit Louis) in 1666 but unfortunately remained in force for only five years. The minting ceased due to the poor quality of the coins, which contained so little silver that they were considered forgeries. Unfortunately, this attempt by the monks of Seborga to mint coins to pay off the debts accumulated by the principality failed without a second chance, the mint closed definitively in 1671, and is still closed today, although it is still believed to be active today.

Luigino of the ancient principality (1666-1671)

The ‘modern luigini’ invented by Giorgio Carbone and his successors.

We have published an article to clarify both the Luigini minted since 1995 by George I and successors and the SPL (Seborga Petit Louis) currency currently listed on the New York Stock Exchange. However, we must point out, contrary to the claims of the improvised “bankers” who invented them, that although they are collector coins, travel cheques or international currency, these monetary instruments have no continuity with the mint of the ancient medieval state, having been permanently closed in 1671 by Louis XIV. For further clarification, please read our article: “SPL (Seborga Petit Louis), Luigino e travel cheque a Seborga” click here.

Luigini of modern times (1995 to present)

On 20 August 2023, Ms Nina Dobler presented Seborga with the first banknote worth no less than 3 luigins.
The paradox is that this is a souvenir banknote, with no legal value, contrary to the official quotation on the Nasdaq (New York Stock Exchange) partner website where the luigino (SPL) is quoted daily along with all legal value banknotes.

Cripto currency

Cryptocurrencies are becoming an increasingly popular investment tool. We are working on a cryptocurrency project called Grifoncoin, a so-called stable coin, i.e. backed by gold and real estate, which will see the light of day soon.
